International Relations Office (DRI) promotes cultural immersion for international students

On March 29 and April 5, the Welcome Project team, from the International Relations Office (DRI), promoted cultural events that offered international students an immersive experience of Minas Gerais culture.

On March 29, a cultural tour of Belo Horizonte brought together over 80 international students. The itinerary included visits to the Kubitschek House Museum and the “Women of Pampulha” walking tour through the Pampulha Architectural Complex, followed by lunch and a stop at the iconic Central Market. The group also enjoyed a guided visit to the Palácio das Artes and concluded the day at Américo Renné Giannetti Municipal Park. The tour gave students the opportunity to explore emblematic landmarks of Minas Gerais’ capital, offering a rich and immersive cultural experience.

Following the cultural tour, international students shared reflections on the most memorable moments of the experience. One participant noted, “Discovering museums, art venues, and captivating stories truly enchanted me.”

The culture, architecture, and gastronomy of Minas Gerais were highlighted as key elements that reflect the region’s historical and cultural richness.

On April 5, the Welcome Project organized a visit to the district of São Bartolomeu, in Ouro Preto, with the participation of over 60 international students. The group attended the traditional Guava Festival, a renowned cultural and culinary event in the region. During the visit, students learned about the artisanal production of guava sweets, which have been officially recognized as intangible cultural heritage of Minas Gerais since 2008.

One of the participants shared their impressions of the event: “I enjoyed the exhibition and seeing the variety of guava-based sweets, as well as the traditional dances. It was a wonderful experience!”

Beyond expanding students’ knowledge of Minas Gerais culture, the tours also encouraged interaction among students from various countries and academic programs, strengthening their integration.

These initiatives reaffirm the commitment of the International Relations Office to promoting the cultural, academic, and social inclusion of international students, while valuing the exchange of experiences and the celebration of cultural diversity within the university environment.
