Researchers from the School of Pharmacy publish an article in an international scientific journal

The article was published in the British Journal of Pharmacology, scientific journal of the British Pharmacological Society, responsible for the most relevant publications of the International Union of Basic & Clinical Pharmacology (IUPHAR).

The publication is the result of Ana Carolina Moreira Souza's thesis. She holds a PhD from the Postgraduate Education Program in Pharmaceutical Sciences (CiPharma) from Federal University of Ouro Preto (UFOP) and was advisored by Professors Andrea Grabe Guimarães and Vanessa Carla Furtado Mosqueira, both from the Department of Pharmacy (DEFAR/UFOP).

Most of the work was done at University of Montpellier, in France, but the research laboratories from CiPharma and the Institute of Biological Sciences (ICB) at UFMG were also used.

The study shows the cardiotoxicity mechanism of artemether, one of the drugs recommended by WHO for the treatment of malaria. The great innovation is the demonstration of cardiotoxicity prevention with the formulation of the drug in nanocapsules for oral administration.
